Understanding God’s Given Mandate to Mankind on Earth.
Introduction:
One of the most profound questions every believer must answer is: Why did God create man? Understanding God’s original intention for humanity is fundamental to discovering our purpose, fulfilling our assignment, and living a life that aligns with heaven’s agenda.
Many people spend their lives pursuing success, wealth, influence, and personal ambitions without ever understanding the reason for their existence. Yet, from the very beginning, God clearly revealed His purpose for mankind.
The Scriptures provide us with insight into God’s original mandate for humanity. In Genesis 1:26-30, we see God’s deliberate intention concerning man:
“Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion…”
This passage reveals not only who man is but also what man was created to do.
The Word Was There from the Beginning
John 1:1 tells us:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Before anything existed, God existed.
Before creation began, the Word existed.
Everything God created came through the power of His Word.
This teaches us that God functions through divine wisdom, order, and intentionality.
Nothing God does is accidental.
Nothing God does lacks purpose.
Nothing God does is random.
Every action of God is deliberate and purposeful.
Since man was created in God’s image, man was also designed to function according to God’s principles.
Just as God speaks, creates, plans, and establishes purpose, man was designed to operate within those same divine patterns.
God’s Mandate to Mankind
Genesis 1:28 reveals the first commission ever given to humanity:
“Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion…”
This is what we call the Mandate.
It was God’s assignment to mankind.
It was God’s delegation of authority.
It was God’s declaration of purpose.
The mandate consisted of several key responsibilities.
1. Be Fruitful
Fruitfulness is more than numerical increase.
Fruitfulness means producing results that reflect God’s purpose.
God never intended mankind to live unproductive lives.
Everything God creates carries the capacity for multiplication and increase.
As believers, fruitfulness should be evident in our character, our relationships, our service, our ministry, and our impact upon others.
2. Multiply
God’s purpose was never meant to remain confined to one person.
His intention has always been expansion.
God desires His nature, His truth, and His kingdom influence to spread throughout the earth.
The believer is called to reproduce spiritual life in others through discipleship, mentorship, teaching, and kingdom influence.
3. Fill the Earth
God desired that the entire earth would become a reflection of His glory.
His intention was not limited to a garden in Eden.
His purpose was global.
Humanity was commissioned to extend God’s order, culture, and government throughout the earth.
Today, believers continue that mandate by bringing kingdom values into every sphere of society.
4. Subdue the Earth
To subdue means to bring under proper management and stewardship.
God entrusted creation to mankind.
Man was not called to exploit the earth but to steward it responsibly.
This principle applies not only to natural resources but also to the gifts, opportunities, and responsibilities God places in our hands.
5. Exercise Dominion
Dominion is one of the most misunderstood concepts in Scripture.
Biblical dominion is not oppression or control.
Dominion is the exercise of God’s delegated authority under God’s government.
It means managing what God has entrusted to us according to His will and purpose.
God intended mankind to govern creation as His representatives.
In calling the first man to dominion, God was saying to Adam, I have given you a domain ( area or sphere of authority) over which you will act as god in my stead.
God Works Through Patterns and Processes
One of the most important truths revealed throughout Scripture is that God works through patterns and processes.
Many people desire immediate results, but God often works progressively.
Everything God does follows divine order.
Creation itself demonstrates this principle.
God did not create everything at once.
He worked systematically.
Day by day, He established foundations.
He created environments before placing life within them.
He prepared the earth before creating man.
This reveals an important lesson:
God values process because process prepares us for purpose.
Many believers want the promise without the preparation.
They want the manifestation without the process.
But God often develops character before releasing responsibility.
Jesus and God’s Process
Even Jesus submitted Himself to divine process.
He grew in wisdom.
He matured in understanding.
He fulfilled every stage of God’s plan according to divine timing.
If the Son of God embraced process, we must also embrace God’s process in our lives.
Why Understanding the Mandate Matters
Many people struggle with identity because they have lost sight of God’s original purpose.
When the purpose is unknown, confusion becomes inevitable.
When an assignment is unclear, life becomes directionless.
Understanding God’s mandate helps us answer life’s most important questions:
- Why am I here?
- What has God called me to do?
- How should I live?
- What is my role in God’s kingdom?
The mandate gives meaning to our existence.
It reminds us that life is bigger than personal ambition.
We exist for God’s purpose.
Christ Restores the Original Mandate
Sin disrupted God’s original design.
Humanity lost fellowship with God.
The image of God within man became distorted.
The ability to fulfill God’s purpose became compromised.
But through Jesus Christ, restoration became possible.
Jesus came not only to save us from sin but also to restore us to God’s original intention.
Through Christ:
- Our relationship with God is restored.
- Our identity is restored.
- Our purpose is restored.
- Our authority is restored.
- Our kingdom assignment is restored.
In Christ, we become ambassadors of God’s kingdom once again.
The Lord Jesus was the beginning of another creation- the New Creation after the order of Jesus Christ, the last Adam.
Romans, the 5th chapter & 1 Corinthians, the 15th chapter, lay this out clearly.
The principles revealed throughout the mandate given to the first Adam are deeply established and revealed in the Last Adam.
In fact, the frustrated purpose of God in the first Adam was manifestly fulfilled in the Last Adam.
Sonship was lost in the first Adam; it was fulfilled in the Last.
Look at John 1:12-13.
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Following Jesus is the only pathway to recover, rediscover, and re- enter the mandate.
We must begin to take a fresh look at this matter of the renewing of our minds; it is more than a religious matter, it is a necessity if we recapture the sonship mindset.
Salvation through faith in Christ becomes much more than an escape route to heaven. It is deliverance from the shackles of the fallen creation and its master, Satan. It is freedom to embrace once again, the liberty of sons in the love of God.
Living Out the Mandate Today
The mandate did not end in Genesis. It only paused.
It continues through every believer today.
God still desires men and women who will represent Him in every sphere of life.
Whether in ministry, business, education, government, healthcare, media, family, or community leadership, believers are called to manifest God’s nature and advance His purpose.
The world is waiting for sons and daughters who understand why they were created.
The earth is waiting for people who will carry God’s image, embrace His process, and fulfill His mandate.
Conclusion
The story of humanity begins with a mandate.
God created man in His image and likeness.
He entrusted mankind with responsibility.
He commissioned humanity to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, subdue it, and exercise dominion.
God’s purpose has never changed.
Today, He is still calling His people to embrace their divine assignment.
May we understand who we are.
May we embrace God’s patterns and processes.
May we walk faithfully in His purpose.
And may we fulfill the mandate He has entrusted to us for our generation.
You were not created merely to exist.
You were created to represent God.
You were created to carry His purpose.
You were created to fulfill His mandate.
